Winter 2012-13 - AIARE L1 & L2 Course Dates

Our winter 2012-13 AIARE Level 1 and 2 course dates have been posted.  Last winter we experienced a significant uptick in the total number of students taking our avalanche courses that was consistent with the increase experienced by other local providers.  For the upcoming winter, we will be offering 9 separate AIARE Level 1 courses and 2 AIARE Level 2 courses.

AIARE Level 1 - Decision Making in Avalanche Terrain (24 hour course)

The L1 course is designed to provide a basic understanding of why avalanches occur and to develop a decision making framework while traveling in avalanche terrain. This course also provides instruction in companion rescue and beacon use in the event of an avalanche. Students who successfully complete the program will receive an AIARE level 1 certificate.  This course is a basic requirement for anyone who plans to ski or travel in the backcountry in winter in avalanche terrain and generally involves 1.5 days of classroom study combined with 1.5 days spent in the field.  Our courses take place in Leavenworth, WA and in the backcountry near Stevens Pass Ski area.

AIARE Level 2 - Analyzing Snow Stability & Avalanche Hazard

The L2 course builds skills introduced in our L1 course.  Unlike the level 1 course this program actually begins the process of forecasting avalanche hazard and for this reason is considered basic professional level training.  Common participants include mountain guides, ski patrollers, and people who travel frequently in backcountry terrain that want to further develop their decision making skills and knowledge of avalanches.  The Level 2 course builds from the introductory avalanche hazard management model used in the AIARE Level 1 and adds evaluation of factors critical to making a stability evaluation.  Our courses take place in Leavenworth and a variety of backcountry areas in central Washington with an eye to gaining experience at different elevations and geographic distance at and East of the Cascade Crest.

  • January 10-13, 2013
  • February 7-10, 2013
  • Custom Dates Available
Cost: $495
